The Tamil Nadu Institute of palliative Medicine (TNIPM) is a premier training and service institution established in 2012 under SCOPE INDIA. We are dedicated to building compassionate, competent and skill workforce for geriatic and palliative care.TNIPM is a pioneering institution established under SCOPE India with the vision of promoting compassionate, quality, and community-based care for older persons, persons with disabilities, individuals with chronic illnesses, and those requiring palliative and end-of-life care. TNIPM was founded to address the growing need for trained caregivers, community health workers, and palliative care professionals in Tamil Nadu and neighboring regions.
Since its inception, TNIPM has been actively involved in education, training, research, advocacy, and service delivery in the fields of palliative care, geriatric care, disability rehabilitation, community health, and social welfare. The institution works closely with government departments, universities, medical colleges, hospitals, and national organizations to strengthen healthcare and social support systems for vulnerable populations.
ABOUT FOUNDER & MANAGING DIRECTOR
Dr. S. Sathiya Babu, Founder Director of TNIPM and Managing Trustee of SCOPE INDIA, is a development professional with over 30 years of experience in community development, elder care, palliative care, training, and capacity building. He holds a Doctorate in Training and Capacity Building and has worked extensively to promote community-driven models for social change. He has more than six years of international experience as a United Nations Volunteer in Sri Lanka and Indonesia, where he contributed to community rehabilitation, disaster recovery, and participatory development. He also served with Help Age India for over 22 years, leading innovative community-based elder care programmes in Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu.
Dr. Sathiya Babu is known for developing the Village Elders Care Committee (VECC) Model and for his book, “An Experiment of Community-Based Village Level Elders Care.” He also established the Tamaraikulam Elders Village, one of the first community-based elders’ villages in the world.He played a pioneering role in introducing Tamil Nadu’s first structured Community-Based Palliative Care Model under NRHM, which later influenced the state’s home-based care approach, including the “Illam Thedi Maruthuvam” initiative.
Under his leadership, TNIPM has grown into a leading institution in geriatric care, palliative care, and caregiver training. It is now a National level collaborative training institute of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MSJE) through the National Institute of Social Defence (NISD). Dr. Sathiya Babu also serves on the Steering Committee Member for the Advanced Geriatric Palliative Care Course of NISD/MSJE and supports national training initiatives for caregiver development. His work continues to inspire compassionate, community-based care for older persons and vulnerable populations.
